I’m focussing on how a better understanding of your financials and MI can get you looking in the right areas of your business for some quick wins that will really move you forward.
Bringing The Fun Back Into Your Business
Unless you’ve done an MBA, or some other formal business study, you’ve probably learned everything you know about managing your business at the coalface. There’ll be some positives in that to be sure, but I daresay there’ll also be some gaps that, if you could fill them, would allow you to progress a whole lot faster.
When you get to focus on what you’re good at, giving financial advice to clients is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. But it very quickly becomes a slog if you spend most of your days dealing with ‘management stuff’ rather than seeing clients.
Most firms have got reams of management information or MI, but it rarely provides a whole lot of insight into what’s happening in their business. A lot of the data is stuff around sales pipeline, clients secured, new fees earned, new AUM and recurring income. Don’t get me wrong you need to know that stuff, but it’s rear view mirror information; it just tells you what happened. It doesn’t provide any real insight into where there might be issues in your business, so that you can proactively explore them, identify the blockage, resolve it and move forward.
